Calabar, Dec. 3, 2025 — The Nigerian Army announced on Wednesday that its troops successfully rescued four abducted civilians in Cross River State.
According to a statement, soldiers of the 13 Brigade carried out a well-coordinated waterborne operation on Tuesday, December 2, along the Bakassi waterways. The troops intercepted armed militants who were transporting the victims in a speedboat towards Isangele, Achibong in the Republic of Cameroon.
Upon sighting the soldiers, the militants opened fire in an attempt to escape. The troops responded decisively, overpowering the kidnappers and securing the release of the victims.
The Army explained that the operation was part of routine patrols designed to deny criminal elements freedom of movement along key waterways in the region.
The rescued victims have since been handed over to relevant authorities for medical checks and reunification with their families.
Military officials stressed that the operation underscores the Army’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining security in border communities, especially in areas vulnerable to cross-border criminal activities.
Security analysts note that the Bakassi peninsula and surrounding waterways have long been hotspots for piracy, kidnapping, and smuggling, making sustained military presence crucial for stability.
