Boko Haram: Zulum Meets Army Chief, Declares ‘The Worst Is Over’

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has expressed optimism that the long battle against Boko Haram insurgents is nearing its end. Speaking after a closed-door meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Zulum declared that the worst phase of the insurgency has passed, citing improved security and the return of displaced communities to their homes.

The meeting, held at the Government House in Maiduguri, focused on strengthening military operations in the northeast and consolidating recent gains against insurgents. Zulum praised the Nigerian Army for its resilience and sacrifices, noting that the relative peace now enjoyed in many parts of Borno was a testament to their efforts.

He emphasized that while isolated attacks still occur, the scale and intensity of Boko Haram’s operations have significantly reduced compared to previous years. The governor highlighted ongoing reconstruction projects, resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), and the reopening of schools and markets as evidence that normalcy is gradually returning.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgents and ensuring that communities remain safe. He assured the governor that the military will continue to collaborate with local authorities to prevent a resurgence of violence.

Security analysts, however, caution that while progress has been made, vigilance remains critical as splinter groups and bandit networks continue to pose threats in parts of the northeast.
