The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has strongly criticized the U.S. government’s ongoing mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, calling the policy “inhumane, unjust, and contrary to the values of human dignity and compassion.”
According to The New York Times, the bishops’ statement came in response to recent deportation operations along the U.S.-Mexico border and in several major cities, where thousands of migrants have been detained and returned to their home countries under the administration’s tightened immigration measures.
CNN reports that Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, chair of the USCCB’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, urged federal authorities to reconsider the approach, emphasizing that “every person, regardless of immigration status, deserves respect, safety, and an opportunity to build a life free from fear.”
Reuters adds that the bishops highlighted the moral responsibility of nations to welcome and protect the vulnerable, referencing Pope Francis’ repeated appeals for compassion toward migrants and refugees. They further warned that the recent deportations risk separating families and worsening humanitarian conditions in countries struggling with violence and poverty.
Associated Press notes that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security defended its actions, stating that deportations are being carried out in accordance with federal law and focused on individuals with criminal convictions or prior deportation orders.
Despite this, Catholic leaders across several dioceses announced plans to expand legal aid and pastoral support for immigrant families affected by the recent operations.
