Nigerian singer Crayon has marked the first birthday of his late mother since her passing by honoring tradition and paying tribute to her with an emotional gesture — cutting off his dreadlocks in her honour. The Mavin Records artist shared heartfelt messages and photos on social media, reflecting on his enduring love and respect for his mother, who died in July 2025, just days before his own birthday.
Afrobeats star Charles Chibueze Chukwu, known professionally as Crayon, took to Instagram on Thursday to share images of himself with his dreadlocks cut short, explaining that the act was done in keeping with his family’s tradition as the first son. In his post, he wrote that he hoped the tribute would demonstrate “how much I love, respect and adore you mum,” adding that he misses her every day.
Crayon’s mother, Evelyn Chukwu, passed away suddenly on July 4, 2025 ,just four days before his 28th birthday — a loss he previously described as “the darkest day of my life.” In earlier tributes, he called her his “soldier, backbone, angel, and pillar,” noting the profound influence she had on his life and career. She was buried in October 2025 and Crayon gave a tearful farewell, promising to care for his siblings and keep her memory alive.
In the Instagram tribute accompanying his haircut photos, Crayon reaffirmed his commitment to making his late mother proud and expressed the difficulty of navigating life without her. He signed off the message with an emotional dedication: “Happy heavenly birthday mum… Till we meet again. I love you mum, EVELYN CHUKWU.”
