The Nigeria Police Force in Ebonyi State has marked the 70th anniversary of female officers in the service, celebrating decades of courage, leadership, and groundbreaking contributions by women while reaffirming a firm stance against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across the state.
At a commemorative event held in Abakaliki, senior female officers, police veterans, civil society groups, and community leaders gathered to honor the legacy of the first women who joined the force in 1955. Speakers highlighted how female officers have evolved from administrative roles to frontline operations, investigative leadership, tactical commands, and community policing.
The Police Commissioner noted that women have become “indispensable pillars” in modern policing, playing key roles in intelligence, conflict mediation, juvenile protection, cybercrime investigations, and crisis management. She emphasized the force’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women at all ranks.
During the ceremony, the command also used the platform to strongly condemn rising cases of GBV, pledging stricter enforcement, faster prosecution, and improved victim support. The Gender Desk Unit announced new interventions, including community outreach programs, school sensitization drives, and confidential hotlines for survivors.
Human rights advocates praised the police for using the anniversary to reinforce accountability, urging continued reforms to protect vulnerable groups and ensure swift justice.
The celebration ended with awards for outstanding female officers, exhibitions showcasing policing history, and a renewed call for community collaboration in ending gender-based violence across Ebonyi State.
