The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of biometric verification systems for flight boarding across Nigerian airports, alongside the concession of Port Harcourt International Airport to private operators. These decisions were announced by Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, following the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The biometric system is expected to enhance passenger identity verification, reduce boarding time, and improve overall airport security and efficiency. It will be rolled out in phases, beginning with major international terminals.
In a related move, the concession of Port Harcourt International Airport aims to improve service delivery and reduce financial losses from underperforming terminals. Keyamo assured aviation workers that the concession would not result in job losses, emphasizing that the government remains committed to protecting workers’ rights while modernizing infrastructure.
The FEC also approved several other aviation projects, including the construction of a permanent headquarters for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and contracts for airport management solutions and firefighting vehicles.
