Abuja, Dec. 3, 2025 — The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light for the rollout of 4,000 telecommunications towers across rural Nigeria, in a bid to expand digital access and bolster national security.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed the approval after Wednesday’s FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. He explained that the towers will be strategically located in underserved areas to provide reliable mobile and internet services.
According to Idris, the initiative is designed to:
Improve rural connectivity and integrate remote communities into the digital economy.
Support security agencies with better communication infrastructure for intelligence gathering and rapid response.
Facilitate commerce, education, and financial inclusion in rural areas.
The Minister stressed that the project aligns with Tinubu’s administration’s broader agenda of leveraging technology to drive economic growth and enhance national security.
Industry experts welcomed the move but cautioned that successful implementation will depend on adequate funding, maintenance, and collaboration with telecom operators. They also urged the government to consider renewable energy solutions to power towers in remote areas.
Analysts say the approval underscores Nigeria’s push to modernize its digital infrastructure, a critical step toward addressing both economic and security challenges in rural communities.
