The Federal Government has launched an official investigation into the confrontation between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Naval officer Lt. A.D. Yerima, following widespread backlash from retired military generals and civil society groups.
The incident, which occurred at Plot 1946, Cadastral Zone B10, Gudu District, Abuja, involved Wike allegedly confronting the naval officer over a disputed land development project linked to the Nigerian Navy. A video of the encounter, which quickly went viral, showed the minister questioning the officer’s authority and demanding a halt to construction activities.
Military Veterans React
Prominent retired military figures, including former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd.), expressed outrage over the minister’s conduct. In a joint statement, the ex-generals described the incident as a “threat to national security” and a “disrespect to the Armed Forces.”
“This type of behavior undermines the authority of the Commander-in-Chief and the dignity of our military institutions,” Buratai stated.
Government Response
In response to the uproar, Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru confirmed that a full-scale investigation has been ordered to determine whether any protocols were violated and to prevent future occurrences. The probe will involve the Ministry of Defence, the Nigerian Navy, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
