The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) confirmed that five persons lost their lives in a crash involving an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck along the Alapoka axis of Papalanto Road in Yewa South Local Government Area. TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred after the truck suffered a brake failure, ramming into the tricycle and killing all five passengers on board.
The victims’ bodies were evacuated to the morgue by operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Akinbiyi urged motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles and avoid reckless driving, especially during the festive season when traffic volume is high.
In a separate incident, three people died in another crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at Fidiwo Bridge, involving a Toyota jeep that suffered a tyre burst. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to crash under the bridge. According to FRSC spokesperson Florence Okpe, five people were in the vehicle at the time; three died instantly while two others sustained injuries.
Authorities have warned that road users must exercise caution, noting that most accidents in Ogun are linked to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, and disregard for traffic regulations. TRACE and FRSC said they will intensify patrols and enforcement across major highways to reduce fatalities.
The twin tragedies have sparked renewed calls for stricter road safety campaigns and better enforcement of regulations to protect commuters.
