Millions of low-income families across the United States have been left uncertain about their next meal after a U.S. Supreme Court order temporarily halted federal food stamp payments, pending a legal review of a key funding provision in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
According to Reuters (Nov. 9, 2025), the order, issued late Friday, came after several state attorneys general challenged the legality of recent executive adjustments to SNAP disbursements made under the 2024 Food Security Expansion Act. The freeze has immediately affected the Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) ability to issue payments scheduled for the coming week.
CNN reported that over 38 million Americans, including children, seniors, and disabled individuals, rely on SNAP benefits each month. The court’s decision has raised fears of hunger and hardship among families already struggling with rising food and housing costs.
The Washington Post noted that advocacy groups have criticized the ruling, warning that even a brief disruption could lead to widespread food insecurity. “Families living paycheck to paycheck cannot wait for legal clarifications — this ruling has real, human consequences,” said Karen Lewis, director of the National Food Equity Coalition.
NBC News added that the Biden administration has filed an emergency motion seeking clarification from the Court, urging a swift resolution to prevent “irreparable harm to millions of vulnerable Americans.” The administration has pledged to explore temporary relief mechanisms through state-level emergency food programs if the suspension persists.
