The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed widespread allegations of vote-buying during the 2025 Anambra State governorship election, insisting that no credible evidence has been presented to support the claims.
The accusations came from several candidates, including Chukwuma Soludo (APGA), George Moghalu (Labour Party), and Chioma Ifemeludike (AAC), who alleged that voters were openly selling their votes for amounts ranging from ₦3,000 to ₦5,000, particularly in areas like Nnewi South Local Government Area.
However, speaking on Channels Television’s News at 10, Queen Agwu, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Anambra State, described the claims as unsubstantiated and urged anyone with proof to come forward.
“We have not received any credible evidence of vote-buying. If anyone has proof, they should submit it through the proper channels,” Agwu stated.
Observers and civil society groups monitoring the election also raised concerns about low voter turnout, logistical gaps, and financial inducement, despite acknowledging improvements in INEC’s operations.
