The Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) has reaffirmed its respect for the Benin Royal Palace and the Oba of Benin, amid renewed public debate surrounding the ownership and custody of the Benin Bronzes — the centuries-old artifacts looted during the 1897 British invasion of the Benin Kingdom.
In a statement released on Monday, November 10, 2025, MOWAA said it remains committed to working collaboratively with the Benin Royal Court, Edo State Government, and international partners to ensure that the historic bronzes are preserved and returned to their rightful cultural context.
According to The Guardian Nigeria, the museum clarified that it is not in conflict with the Oba’s palace, countering online speculation suggesting tension over the management of the returned artifacts. The institution reiterated that its mission is to support heritage conservation, academic research, and public access to West Africa’s cultural legacy.
Vanguard News reported that the clarification followed social media reports alleging disagreements between MOWAA and the Royal Museum of Benin over custody and exhibition rights of the artifacts. MOWAA emphasized that both institutions share a common goal — to protect, restore, and celebrate the Benin Kingdom’s artistic heritage.
Premium Times noted that MOWAA’s leadership assured that any artifacts repatriated to Nigeria would be handled in accordance with international cultural heritage standards and in full consultation with the Oba’s palace.
