MultiChoice Nigeria confirmed on Friday that the price of a DStv decoder has been reduced from ₦10,000 to ₦7,900, while the GOtv decoder will now retail at ₦6,500. The company said the move was designed to make its services more accessible to households ahead of the festive season.
In South Africa, MultiChoice also announced a sharp reduction in the cost of its DStv HD Single View decoder, slashing the price from R699 to R299 without installation, and from R1,299 to R699 with installation. The promotion, which runs until December 31, 2025, is part of the company’s “Thol-iUpsize” campaign, which also offers free package upgrades to new customers.
The company explained that the decision to cut decoder prices was influenced by the need to retain market share amid growing competition from streaming platforms and to cushion subscribers against economic pressures. MultiChoice has lost more than 2.8 million active subscribers across Africa in the past two years, according to industry reports, and is now pursuing aggressive pricing strategies to win back customers.
Executives said the reductions reflect a broader “value reset” strategy, positioning DStv and GOtv as affordable options for families seeking premium entertainment. Analysts note that the move could help MultiChoice stabilize its subscriber base while reinforcing its dominance in the pay-TV market.
Customers welcomed the announcement, with many describing the price cuts as timely given rising living costs. Retailers have already begun advertising the new decoder prices, which are expected to boost sales in the run-up to Christmas.
