ABUJA — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to the United States’ re-designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), blaming the development on what he called “incompetence and failed leadership.”
In a statement posted on his official X account, Obi said the CPC label — which flags countries for severe violations of religious freedom — should alarm every well-meaning Nigerian. He warned that the designation could lead to diplomatic sanctions or even military action.
“The recent pronouncement by the US government declaring Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and indicating possible military action should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” Obi wrote.
He criticized the current administration for lacking the competence, commitment, and patriotism needed to govern effectively. Obi also lamented the worsening insecurity, mass killings, and destruction of property across the country, describing them as symptoms of a national tragedy caused by poor leadership.
Obi urged the Nigerian government to treat the CPC designation as a wake-up call and take urgent steps to restore security, uphold human rights, and improve governance. He emphasized that Nigeria’s international reputation is at stake and called for a more responsible and transparent approach to leadership.
The U.S. designation, which was previously lifted in 2021, was reinstated in late October 2025 following renewed concerns over religious persecution and violence in parts of Nigeria.
