The Kebbi State school abduction that shocked Nigeria earlier this week has taken a new turn, as one of the abducted girls managed to break free from her captors and return home safely.
The attack occurred on Monday, November 17, 2025, when armed gunmen stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.
At least 25 students were abducted, while the school’s vice principal was killed during the raid. Witnesses reported that the attackers arrived in large numbers, firing sporadically before whisking the girls into the surrounding forests.
According to the school principal, Musa Rabi Magaji, one of the abducted girls slipped away from the kidnappers late Monday and found her way home. Another student, who was not among the 25 officially listed as abducted, also managed to escape during the chaos.
A video verified by the Associated Press shows the two girls, appearing to be in their early teens, reunited with family members in their village.
Security forces, alongside local hunters and vigilantes, have intensified operations in the forests to rescue the remaining students. The Chief of Army Staff has assured families that all efforts are being made to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the girls.
The escape has offered a measure of relief to anxious parents and communities, though fears remain high given the persistence of school abductions in northern Nigeria. Analysts warn that the incident underscores the urgent need for stronger security around schools, particularly in rural and border regions vulnerable to banditry.
