Tension has erupted in the Super Eagles’ camp just 48 hours before their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Gabon, as players reportedly boycotted training over unpaid match allowances and bonuses, raising concerns about Nigeria’s preparation for the upcoming fixture.
According to The Punch, the squad refused to take part in Monday evening’s training session in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, insisting that all outstanding payments be settled before they resume full participation. Team sources said the players have been owed several months of allowances, including bonuses from recent international fixtures and travel reimbursements.
BBC Sport Africa reports that senior members of the team, including captain William Troost-Ekong, led a closed-door meeting with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials late Monday night. While discussions were described as “ongoing,” no concrete resolution had been reached as of Tuesday morning.
Channels Television confirmed that the NFF has acknowledged the situation but urged fans to remain calm, assuring that the federation is working with the Ministry of Sports Development to ensure immediate payment of outstanding entitlements.
