The Philippines has begun large-scale evacuations as it braces for the impact of Super Typhoon Araw, a powerful storm system expected to make landfall early Monday, November 10, 2025. Authorities say nearly one million residents across vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas have already been evacuated amid warnings of destructive winds and life-threatening flooding.
According to Reuters (Nov. 9, 2025), Typhoon Araw is currently packing sustained winds of up to 260 km/h (160 mph), making it one of the strongest storms to threaten the country in recent years. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued the highest storm alert for the eastern provinces of Samar, Leyte, and Catanduanes, with forecasts predicting torrential rainfall and storm surges of up to five meters.
CNN Philippines reported that local governments have activated emergency shelters, while the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has deployed rescue teams and relief supplies to affected regions. Schools and public offices have been ordered closed, and domestic flights to central and southern regions have been suspended.
Al Jazeera added that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged calm and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of early evacuation. “Our priority is saving lives. Everyone must heed official warnings and move to safety,” he said during a national address broadcast from Manila.
The Guardian noted that the Philippines faces an average of 20 tropical cyclones each year, but meteorologists warn that Araw could surpass the intensity of 2013’s Typhoon Haiyan, which left over 6,000 people dead.
