Tragedy in Lagos: Multiple Fatalities Reported in Agbelekale Road Accident
Agbelekale

A tragic road accident at Agbelekale, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State, has claimed several lives and left many others injured, plunging the community into mourning. The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday evening, causing chaos and traffic gridlock across the area.

According to reports from The Punch (Nov. 5, 2025), the accident involved a commercial bus and a tanker loaded with petroleum products, which collided near the Agbelekale bus stop along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Eyewitnesses said the tanker lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle before ramming into the bus carrying passengers.

Vanguard News reported that the impact of the collision caused a fire outbreak, engulfing both vehicles and nearby roadside stalls. Several passengers were trapped inside the burning bus before rescue teams arrived. Residents described the scene as “horrific,” with thick smoke visible from several kilometers away.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Lagos Fire Service swiftly mobilized to the scene. In a statement, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that multiple casualties were recorded and that bodies of victims had been recovered and deposited at a nearby morgue.

Channels Television quoted emergency responders as saying that at least nine people died, while several others sustained burns and fractures. Authorities have since cleared the wreckage and reopened the expressway to ease traffic flow.

The Lagos State Government has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and reiterated its commitment to stricter road safety enforcement and tanker regulation to prevent similar tragedies.
