Abuja, Dec. 5, 2025 — The Nigeria Football Federation has hailed William Troost-Ekong as a “dedicated, selfless and humble leader” after the defender confirmed his immediate retirement from international football on December 4, 2025.
In a statement, the NFF praised the 32-year-old for his passion, pride, and professionalism since making his debut in 2015. Troost-Ekong captained Nigeria through multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns, winning a bronze medal in 2019 and a silver medal in 2023, while also featuring at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“Captain Troost-Ekong served with gusto, zeal and patriotic fervour. He bestrode the pitch with passion, pride, purpose and a commendable sense of duty,” the NFF said The Punch P.M. News Leadership.
The federation highlighted his leadership qualities, noting that even before becoming captain, he was admired for his discipline, ambition, and commitment to the national colours.
Troost-Ekong’s retirement marks the end of a 10-year international career, during which he earned over 70 caps and scored crucial goals, including at AFCON tournaments.
Fans and teammates have also taken to social media to celebrate his contributions, describing him as a role model for younger players and a symbol of resilience in Nigerian football.
