Workers at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU) in Katsina have commenced a two-week warning strike starting November 3, 2025, following unresolved disputes with the university’s governing council and the Katsina State Government. The strike was declared jointly by four in-house unions: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) The Punch Myschoolnews.
The unions cited longstanding issues including staff welfare, university autonomy, and security of examination records, which they claim have been neglected since 2020 despite repeated engagements with government representatives. According to ASUU UMYU chapter chairman Dr. Murtala Abdullahi, the unions had reached prior understandings with the authorities, but commitments remain unfulfilled The Punch.
The strike is intended as a warning, with the unions urging the government to act swiftly to avoid a full-blown industrial action. Students and academic activities at the university are expected to be significantly disrupted during the two-week period.
