The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for the urgent and unconditional release of the schoolgirls abducted during the recent attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
In a statement issued on November 18, 2025, UNICEF condemned the abduction of at least 25 students and the killing of the school’s vice principal during the raid. The organization stressed that such attacks on schools are a grave violation of children’s rights and undermine Nigeria’s efforts to achieve universal education.
UNICEF Nigeria Representative, Cristian Munduate, emphasized that children must never be targets of violence, and schools should remain safe spaces for learning. She urged the Nigerian government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted girls and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The statement also highlighted UNICEF’s ongoing support for Nigeria’s Safe Schools Initiative, which aims to strengthen security in vulnerable communities and ensure that children can pursue education without fear of violence.
Parents and community members in Kebbi have expressed anguish over the incident, with many calling for stronger protection of schools in rural areas that remain vulnerable to banditry and insurgency.
