Google has officially launched a new AI engineering centre in Taipei, a move praised by both the United States and Taiwan as a significant step in strengthening global technology collaboration.
The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), Washington’s de facto embassy, said the centre underscores the deepening US-Taiwan partnership in advanced technology, particularly in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs also welcomed the investment, noting that it will create high-value jobs and reinforce the island’s position as a hub for innovation.
Google stated that the centre will focus on AI research, engineering, and product development, leveraging Taiwan’s strong talent pool and its strategic role in the semiconductor supply chain. Analysts view the move as part of broader efforts to diversify AI development away from mainland China, while reinforcing Taiwan’s importance in the global tech ecosystem.
The launch comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, with Washington seeking to bolster Taiwan’s resilience against economic and security pressures.
