ABUJA — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused opposition politicians of instigating former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that genocide is occurring in Nigeria, describing the move as “politics taken too far.”
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Wike said the opposition was deliberately feeding foreign narratives to destabilize the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is politics taken too far. You want to bring down your country just because you want to win an election?” Wike said.
Trump had alleged that Christians in Nigeria are victims of genocide and religious persecution, a statement that has sparked widespread reactions. Wike dismissed the claim as exaggerated and politically motivated, warning that such tactics were used in 2015 and could again threaten national unity.
He defended President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that efforts are underway to address insecurity and improve governance. Wike urged political actors to prioritize national interest over electoral ambitions.
The minister also cautioned against the use of international platforms to spread misinformation about Nigeria, saying it undermines the country’s image and could have diplomatic consequences.
