Lagos, Dec. 3, 2025 — Domestic flight fares in Nigeria have surged to unprecedented levels ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, with tickets on popular routes such as Lagos–Abuja and Lagos–Port Harcourt now selling for over ₦300,000.
Travelers expressed frustration at the sharp increase, noting that fares have more than doubled compared to last year’s festive season. Aviation operators attributed the hike to rising operational costs, including aviation fuel, foreign exchange pressures, and maintenance expenses.
Industry experts warn that the soaring prices could push many Nigerians to abandon air travel for road transport, despite security concerns. The development also raises questions about regulatory oversight, as consumer protection groups call on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to intervene.
For airlines, the festive season typically represents peak demand, but analysts say the current pricing risks alienating passengers and worsening public perception of the aviation sector.
