The Nigerian government has strongly opposed its designation as a “country of particular concern” by the United States, a label tied to alleged violations of religious freedom. President Donald Trump reinstated Nigeria on the list in October 2025, citing persistent reports of persecution and violence against religious minorities. In response, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the move as “unfair, outdated, and politically driven,” arguing that the country has made significant strides in promoting religious tolerance and protecting minority rights.
