KANO — Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled a bandits’ attack on Shanono Local Government Area in Kano State, killing 19 assailants during a fierce gun battle.
The operation, carried out under the Joint Task Force Operation MESA, followed a tip-off about bandits’ movement around Ungwan Tudu, Ungwan Tsamiya, and Goron Dutse axis on November 1. The bandits, reportedly arriving from neighboring Katsina State, attempted to infiltrate several communities but were intercepted by troops of the 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army.
According to Captain Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the troops engaged the bandits in a prolonged exchange of gunfire, forcing them to retreat. Several motorcycles and weapons were recovered from the scene.
“The troops neutralised 19 bandits and recovered arms and logistics. Unfortunately, two soldiers and one vigilante lost their lives,” Zubairu said.
The military has since intensified patrols in Shanono, Bagwai, and Tsanyawa LGAs to prevent further incursions. Residents in affected areas have expressed relief and gratitude for the swift response, although concerns remain over recurring attacks from bandits crossing state borders.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged citizens to continue sharing intelligence to support counter-terrorism efforts.
